Under the National Rural Health Mission, Home Based Newborn Care (HBNC) programme was launched in 2011 for accelerated reduction of Neonatal mortality rates especially in rural, remote areas where access to care is largely unavailable or located faraway. The guidelines were revised in 2014.
The programme includes six visits in case of institutional deliveries on 3 rd , 7 th , 14 th , 21 st , 28 th & 42 nd days after birth and one additional visit within 24 hours of delivery in case of home deliveries by ASHA. During the visits, special attention given for babies who are pre-term, low birth weight or ill and SNCU discharged. ASHAs are being paid incentive of Rs. 250/- per newborn after completion of scheduled home visits.
F.Y. 2023-24, more than 1.46 crore (89.3%) newborns received scheduled HBNC visits by ASHA at the door step in the country.
Under the National Health Mission, Home-Based Care for Young Child Programme (HBYC) has been rolled-out since April, 2018 for promotion of health and nutrition of young children, for reducing child morbidity and mortality and for promotion of Early Childhood Development.
Under HBYC, ASHA conducts home visits to young children on 3 rd , 6 th , 9 th , 12 th and 15 th months. During visit, mother/caregiver are counselled for 6 months’ exclusive breast feeding, continued breast feeding with adequate complementary feeding afterward, age appropriate immunization and screen to young children for age appropriate growth and development milestone as per MCP Card along with WASH practices and family planning methods. ASHAs are being paid incentive of Rs. 250/- per young child after completion of scheduled home visits.
F.Y. 2023-24, more than 3.84 crore scheduled home visits were conducted to young children (3months-15 months) by ASHA in 673 implementation districts reported under the programme.
